Description: Titled "Icarus Fallen," this early 1960s painting visualizes the ancient Greek mythological tale of the man who flew too close to the sun. The vertical motion of the painting, along with the suggestion of a figure with wings, present an abstracted version of the myth. Painted by my father, Irving Kaufman (1920-2017), the work is from his middle phase -- when he had moderated the intense brushwork of his 1950s paintings and was focused more on forms and colors, which later became a signature feature. Kaufman painted from the early 1950s into the late 1980s. He also was a professor at the University of Michigan, City College of New York and Columbia University, teaching studio art, aesthetics and art education. The painting has lost its frame, but otherwise none of its very high quality.
