ABOVE LAS VEGAS It's Canyons and Mountains by Robert Cameron A NEW COLLECTION OF HISTORICAL AND ORIGINAL AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHS TEXT BY JACK SHEHAN CAMERON AND COMPANY, SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA ISBN 0-918684-54-4 Above Las Vegas Its Canyons and Mountains is divided into eight sections: *THEN AND NOW *CASINOS *DOWNTOWN *A COMMUNITY MATURES *HELICOPTER TOUR *LAKE MEAD *THE UTAH CANYONS *LAS VEGAS WEST "What strikes one in observing the photos of the southern Nevada area and its surrounding canyons and mountains, is the cohesive blending of man and nature, and how even when man's presence was most intrusive, it doesn't offend when viewed from above. Take Hoover Dam, for instance. From the sky, this white wedge interrupting the even blue flow of the Colorado River appears as natural and wonderful as the water that provides hydroelectric power and nourishment to the valley below. And the Luxor pyramid, located right next to the Excalibur kingdom, across the street from New York-New York megalopolis and the MGM Grand them park. There's no logic to how this hyperbolic architecture raised to the umpteenth power all works together, but somehow it does. Then get out of town and revel in the rose and crimson of Red Rock canyon, or explore the white peaks of Mount Charleston, or go east t the cathedral spires of Bryce Canyon and Zion, and you'll grasp the vastness and antiquity of the region... Jack Sheehan landed in Las Vegas in 1976 with a masters degree in literature, a zero handicap at golf, and no idea what he was going to do for gainful employment. Fate guided him back to the halls of academe, as an English instructor at UNLV, and shortly thereafter he helped start a city magazine, for which he served as editor for 11 years. Along the way, he was writing feature assignments for newspapers and magazines nationwide. To date, Sheehan has written five books, including Las Vegas Stories, a collection of essays; and Buried Lies, with PGA touring professional Peter Jacobsen, which made it to the New York Times and Washington Post bestseller lists. He has also sold two screenplays to Hollywood, one of which was honored by the Nevada Motion Picture division in 1988. In 1991, Sheehan received the Lowell Thomas Award for the outstanding travel article written int he United States. He lives far from the Strip in Las Vegas with his wife Carol and infant son John Patrick.
