Copland has signed his name below his printed name on front cover. The work was written between 1921-1922 while first studying with Boulanger during the summer at Fontainebleau, France. The work is dedicated to Nadia Boulanger. The Passacaglia was premiered by Daniel Ericourt (1903-1998) in January 1923 at the Societe Musicale Independante, Paris. The work begins with an eight bar unaccompanied bass line followed by eight variations. The last two variations are so complex that three staves are necessary to note them clearly. In November 1924 five months after Copland's return to the United States, this work was performed again at the First Young Composers' Concert held by the League of Composers; this was Copland's American premiere as a composer. My name is stamped in the upper right hand corner of cover.
