It is a collection of short stories, poems, and whimsical wordplay, showcasing Lennon's absurd humor, love for puns, and playful manipulation of language. The book's title is a twist on the English phrase "a spanner in the works," reflecting Lennon's wit and approach to language. Many of the pieces in the book explore surreal and nonsensical situations, blending satire with social commentary. The writing style is heavily influenced by Lennon's admiration for Lewis Carroll and Edward Lear, full of nonsensical verse and playful language experiments. It reflects his witty, irreverent, and often cynical view of society, politics, and human nature. 'And the wordplay is still funny. It is a testament not just to our cultural heritage that we can still get the references in his remarks on the TV programme Panorasthma ("Do you prepare Rinkled Dinglebone or Tichie Bimplebean?" to which the answer is "who the hell is Pimpled Dinkletoes?"), but to Lennon's own - for want of a better word - craft. It's a product also of his love for the Goons and Lewis Carroll and Edward Lear. His list of the Famous Five by Enig Blyter still makes me laugh: "Tom, Stan, Dave, Nigel, Berniss, Arthur, Harry, Wee Jockey, Matoombo, and Craig?" He could even make deliberately lazy typos memorable: "Foing the dirty worj", for instance (look at the adjacent keys). As Jon Savage says "These jottings stick like splinters in the mind," and phrases such as "it must be now or neville", "Haddy Grimmble, Randoob", "crumb" (as opposed to "crumbs") and "Last Will and Testicle" became, as far as I was concerned, ineradicably fixed to the point where they came more naturally than the proper English phrases they replaced. The drawings, too, are slapdash in just the right way, and are as inseparable from the text as Tenniel's are from Carroll's.' Definitions of the Condition of a Book As a reputable online book seller, I use the Independent Online Bookseller's Association guidelines on how to describe a book's condition. Below is an explanation of each rating. MINT (M): Without faults or defects, unread, in the same immaculate condition in which it was published (Note: very few 'new' books qualify for this grade, as many times there will be rubs/scuffs to the dust jackets from shipping, or bumped lower spine ends/corners from shelving). FINE (F): Approaches the above, but not crisp. May have been carefully read and dust jacket may have been slightly rubbed or spine ends slightly bumped from shelving/shipping, but no real defects or faults. (NOTE: From here on, there may be '+' and '-' in a grade, which will mean that it is above the grade noted but not quite to the next higher grade for '+', and that it is below the grade noted but not quite to the next lower grade for '-'. NEAR FINE: A book or dust jacket approaching FINE but with a couple of very minor defects or faults. VERY GOOD: A used book showing some small signs of wear on either binding or dust jacket. Any defects/faults must be noted. GOOD: The average used and worn book that has all pages or leaves present. Any defects must be noted. FAIR: A worn book that has complete text pages (including those with maps or plates) but may lack endpapers, half-title page, etc. (which must be noted). Binding, dust jacket, etc. may also be worn. All defects/faults must be noted. POOR / READING COPY: A book that is sufficiently worn that its only merit is the complete text, which must be legible. Any missing maps or plates should still be noted. May be soiled, scuffed, stained, or spotted, and may have loose joints, hinges, pages, etc. EX-LIBRARY: Will always be designated as such no matter what the condition of the book. BOOK CLUB: Will always be noted as such no matter what the condition of the book. BINDING COPY: A book in which the pages or leaves are perfect but the binding is very bad, loose, off, or non-existent.
