Description: Vintage original 8x10 in. U.S. single-weight glossy photograph from the lost silent film drama/romance, A SAINTED DEVIL, released in 1924 by Paramount Pictures and directed by Joseph Henabery. On the night of the wedding of Don Alonzo Castro (Rudolph Valentino) and Julietta (Helena D'Algy), El Tigre (George Siegemann)--prompted by Alonzo's former sweetheart, Carlotta (Nita Naldi)--robs the Castro estate and kidnaps Julietta. Alonzo goes to her rescue, sees a woman in Julietta's bridal veil yield to El Tigre's advances, and leaves embittered against all women. Hoping to have revenge on El Tigre, Alonzo haunts a cafe frequented by the bandit and finally is rewarded with his presence. They fight and El Tigre gets the upper hand but is killed by Don Luis (Tony D'Algy), his enemy. Carmelita (Louise Lagrange), a dancer, reveals that Alonzo mistook Carlotta for Julietta, who is safe in a convent. The beautiful image features one of the film's happier moments and depicts an exterior nighttime medium shot of the handsome Don Alonzo Castro (Rudolph Valentino) as he enjoys a dance with his beautiful bride, Julietta (Helena D'Algy), on the couple's wedding night. The details of their costumes can be seen to full advantage in this close shot and the famous Paramount Studios logo is depicted in the bottom right corner. It is in in fine+ condition with a light trim to all 4 outer borders; a tiny smudge of medium blue ink in the background area to the left of Miss D'Algy's head with a similar-sized smudge above their joined hands and in the center of her hand; two outlines from a paperclip on the right border beneath the top corner that both go into the background area; a 6.5 in. unobtrusive horizontal scratch in the background area above the heads of Miss D'Algy and Valentino; four diagonal scratches of varying sizes in the top left corner of the background area; and a small fingerprint smudge in the center of the right border. There are no pinholes, tears, or other flaws and the image quality is razor-sharp with fine detail and nice contrast. This photograph is from The Sydney Barker Collection as indicated in the center of the verso in handwritten black ink and is dated 1932. Mr. Barker was one of the most famous of the early collectors on Rudolph Valentino. A Sainted Devil is considered a "lost" silent film, as no prints are known to exist. According to the "Guinness Book of Film Facts and Feats," this was the first feature film to be shot with a motorized camera.
