Description: A Compend of History from the Earliest Times; Comprehending a General View of the Present State of the World, with respect to Civilization, Religion, and Government; and a Brief Dissertation on the Importance of Historical Knowledge, First Revised Edition, in 2 Volumes, by Samuel Whelpley. Philadelphia: David Allinson, 1808. This one book contains both volumes. Description: Samuel Whelpley (1766-1817) was a Presbyterian then Baptist minister, and a school teacher. The earliest edition of Whelpley's Compound is Aug 1 1806, published by Henry P Russell in Morris-Town NJ. The next edition is June 21 1807, a First Revised Edition, pub'd by David Allinson in Philadelphia. I have found no copies of these available in the online marketplace. Then comes the copy I am offering, also a First Revised, from 1808. This edition is in full leather. It contains 2 volumes in one. Vol 1 is 174 pgs and covers the Beginning of the world through Charlemagne (800 AD). Vol 2 covers Europe and America through the Revolution (180 pages). A crude "Chronological Table" is appended to Vol 2. (Vol 1 has some unique historical trivia, such as the conviction that Noah's offspring migrated east and founded the Chinese empire.) One of the most interesting features of this book has nothing to do with the subject or the author. The first owner of the book, Josiah Cummings, used an endpaper and the separation page between Vol 1 and Vol 2 as a family record, as if it were a family Bible. Skip to the bottom of this listing for a transcription. This makes the book a very personal document. Sometime in the mid-19th century, the book's owner migrated West, past the Mississippi River, up the Missouri and to unknown points west. This book was found in an old bookstore in Independence MO, the starting point of the Santa Fe, Oregon and California trails. Condition: Good - frail, worn, but still a survivor. The leather binding still holds, there are no missing pages so far as I can tell. Many of the page edges are worn. There is water staining at the end of the book, for maybe the last 25 pages. I didn't see any other writing or underlining except on the blank end- and separation-pages, as mentioned above. There is a pencil figure drawn on a back end page. Not an exlib. Pricing: Buy-It-Now is $45. Shipping is $8 by Ground Advantage (insured). The book will be mailed in a box, not a bubble mailer, for better protection in transit. Not sent by media mail. Provenance: this book is item #RH494, part of a book trove found in 2009. Reader's Heaven was a used bookstore that closed in Independence Missouri. I purchased the rights to sort through and purchase any of the remaining stock of the estimated 22,000 books. In the attic, back rooms and closets, boxes of books were found that had not been opened in decades. None of this stock had ever been offered on Ebay or elsewhere in the online marketplace. Other books from this hoard will follow on Ebay. Transcription of family record.
