Description: Popular in the late 1800s, these fairy lamps were originally designed and marketed by S Clarke Pyramid and Fairy Lamp Co of London England during the middle nineteenth century for use as a deterrent to thieves breaking into homes. Their use quickly became popular as supplementary lamps both in Europe and ultimately in America. Many lamps came with small wax candles produced by the same company These lamps came in all sizes and shapes in both two and three part sets. This sweet example has an original Clarke cup with candle and a nice satin glass shade exhibiting a swirl rib design. The shade of green of the dome seems to be a harder to find color as I have not seen many in this hue. The entire lamp stands 3 1/2” tall with the candle cup measuring 2 7/8” across. The cup is clean with no damage or repairs, albeit I will not rule out mold roughness due to the manufacturing process. The candle itself appears unused. The shade for the most part is in original condition, however, I will note some minor flecks visible on the base rim as pictured. I also will note that the top opening shows mold roughness, original to production. One picture reveals an unopen interior bubble visible on the outside in bright light. All these points are common with these early fairy lamps but are mentioned for accuracy. A wonderful example in a hard to find color ready for display. Please view all pictures as they are considered part of the description. Please check back to my listings often as I will be posting numerous fine examples of glass, pottery and porcelain in the near future. Thank you.
