Description: 9" SCHOENHUT Humpty Dumpty CIRCUS CLOWN in VERY GOOD to EXCELLENT ConditionThis is a wonderful version of the German firm, Schoenhut, of a traveling circus. It is the larger sized 9” version of the clowns produced by them. The clowns were the first to be produced for the circus in 1903 and would be the oldest models of the "Humpty Dumpty" Circus. THIS IS FOR THE LARGER CLOWN ONLY. The last picture depicts both clowns, but the smaller one is found in another auction.He has a hand-painted head with the BIGGEST smiling face. AND the paint is completely intact in EXCELLENT condition!!!The all-wood face and body are cream colored and help depict the “make-up” needed to be a clown. The eyes and eyebrows are hand-painted in black; and the lips, nostrils, and make-up on the forehead/ chin are painted red. The costume is ALL ORIGINAL and in very good condition. Take a look at that pink and yellow one-piece outfit and the cream colored coned hat with cording. The ruffle around the neck and his bric-a-brac ribbon separating the two halves of the onesie is completely intact. A condition issue is his one-piece suit shows some wear and stains in several places. Nearly all the paint to the body and face is intact-- with a minor rub on the chin. The body has 4 joints, and they are completely intact. Both of his leather ears are intact. PLEASE SEE PICTURES for complete description. I can combine shipping if needed.BACKGROUND TO THE SCHOENHUT “HUMPTY DUMPTY” CIRCUS was found on the web in the Cavender Diary (brothers) from 1915. “In 1903, Albert Schoenhut debuted his Humpty Dumpty clown toy. He modeled the toy after the popular play and clown at the time, Humpty Dumpty. Until that time, Schoenhut made toy pianos, dolls and wooden blocks. His toy clown was so successful that within a year he had snowballed into a complete line of circus toys. The Humpty Dumpty Toy Circus. Over the next 30 years, Schoenhut continued to build his circus line to include a ringmaster, lion tamers, carnival wagons, tents, a complete orchestra, minstrels and acrobats, way too many clowns and a full menagerie of exotic animals. Almost all of the figures were fully poseable with slots in their feet so they could climb ladders, swing on trapeze, or ride on the back of a mount” (Cavender Diary, 1915).
