Each rock is a mixture of "scoria" and "pyroclastic breccia", hand-picked directly from the Springerville Volcanic Field, near the White Mountains of east-central Arizona. This listing is for 6 red / reddish-brown rocks, ranging from roughly 3½"- 5" on their longest axis. Spokesmodel Woody says there are some interesting rocks in this group - you'll find a variety of holes, crevices and depressions across their surfaces - one or two would make impressive lava towers in the right setting; they illustrate different types of pockmarking, too. Volcanoes were active here between 300 thousand -1.5 million years ago. When one erupted, it spewed a combination of rock, ash, and water vapor. Hot ash surrounded individual pieces of rock, hardening together as it cooled. That's how these rocks were formed. The red color is the result of its iron content oxidizing during eruption. You can see still features of those individual pieces jutting out along the surface, including elements of the other type of volcanic rock mentioned before - scoria, identifiable by its pockmarks and pores. They would be ideal for the following uses: • In aquariums. Set them out a bit from a corner to create a safe space for smaller fish, or combine them with other rocks to create an underground scene. Scoria lava rocks are extremely lightweight and reduce the risk of damaging your tanks. They offer additional benefits ensuring the health of your aquarium, too.
