Ernie is a dedicated player who is outstanding on pass protection, he gets outside quickly on running plays and is always downfield to make an extra block. He has played in 126 consecutive league games, was named to the Pro Bowl in 1966, 1968, 1970 and 1971. Ernie was the 13th round draft choice of the Cardinals in the 1961 NFL draft after being a star end at Illinois. He was shifted to tackle immediately and moved into a starting role as a rookie. Ernie was a major factor for the Cardinals' successful showing in 1970, combining with All-Stars Larry Wilson and Roger Wehrli along with the rest of the defensive unit to provide St. Louis with one of the most feared defenses in pro football.
