Description: This is a rare list of the participating artists for the Forty-Third Annual ANTOINETTE PERRY AWARDS ceremony held on June 4th, 1989 at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre in New York City.The American Theatre Wing's Tony Awards® got their start in 1947 when the Wing established an awards program to celebrate excellence in the theatre. Named for Antoinette Perry, an actress, director, producer, and the dynamic wartime leader of the American Theatre Wing who had passed away the previous year, the Tony Awards made their official debut at a dinner in the Grand Ballroom of the Waldorf Astoria Hotel on Easter Sunday, April 6th, 1947. Vera Allen, Perry's successor as chairwoman of the Wing, presided over an evening that included dining, dancing, and a program of entertainment. Among those honored at the 1988-89 Tony's with acting awards were JASON ALEXANDER (Jerome Robbins' Broadway), RUTH BROWN (Black and Blue), SCOTT WISE (Jerome Robbins' Broadway), DEBBIE SHAPIRO (Jerome Robbins' Broadway), PHILIP BOSCO (Lend Me a Tenor), PAULINE COLLINS (Shirley Valentine), BOYD GAINES (The Heidi Chronicles)and CHRISTINE BARANSKI (Rumors). The award for "Best Musical" went to "JEROME ROBBINS' BROADWAY", "Best Book of a Musical" (No Nominations) and "Best Original Score" (No Nominations). "Best Play" went to WENDY WASSERSTEIN (The Heidi Chronicles), "Best Choreography" to CHOLLY ATKINS, HENRY LeTANG, FRANKIE MANNING and FAYARD NICHOLAS (Black and Blue), "Best Direction of a Musical" to JEROME ROBBINS (Jerome Robbins' Broadway) and "Best Direction of a Play" to JERRY ZAKS (Lend Me a Tenor). The host for the Forty-Third Annual Tony Awards was Angela Lansbury. Performing or presenting awards were Barry Bostwick, Betty Buckley, Zoe Caldwell, Nell Carter, Carol Channing, Colleen Dewhurst, Jerry Herman, James Earl Jones, Larry Kert, Swoosie Kurtz, John Lithgow, Steve Martin, Richard Thomas, Tommy Tune, Leslie Uggams, Gwen Verdon, August Wilson and B.D. Wong. DETAILS: The Participant's List measures 5" X 8" inches, is printed on a textured card stock and includes the names of the individuals and the nominated plays and musicals that participated in the Tony Awards ceremony.
