Description: Great floral burnt work designs by J Clifton Polchies, Mi'kmaq are on this wooden box. It is a commercial box that has been made to look like a book. There is an oval cut-out on the lid, which after removing the wood piece from inside of the lid, you can place your own photo to show there. NOTE: There is a small area on the front left corner of the box that has had a bit of the wood varnish/veneer chip off. It is not immediately obvious BUT - I am listing it at $15 less than I would have if that chip were not there! The four flowers each with 2 leaves are burnt onto the corners of this box.. On each of the sides Clifton has made a small "bookmark" end. Burnt work is also called pyrography - dictionary definition "Pyrography is the art of decorating wood or other materials with burn marks" As a traditional art of the Wabanaki, burnt work has been used for at nearly 2 centuries and perhaps even prior to European contact... The earliest burnt work design I have seen was on a paddle was dated to 1850 and have been told of others that were even earlier. Wooden objects as well as birch bark items were sometimes decorated using the tips of burning sticks etc. This commercially purchased wooden box has had the all the burnt work designs placed on it by the Mi'kmaq artist, J Clifton Polches. The box has 2 metal hinges on the back. See photo of inside of lid, last photo in slideshow, to see how the photo backing can be removed, photo place on it and then reattached to lid so your photo or painting or??? will show thru the oval cut-out. This wooden box is 8" long, 6" deep and 1.75" high. The oval photo cut out is 5.25" long and 3" high at highest/center. It would make a great desk top box for holding pens, paper clips, erasers, more family photos - etc... or a wonderful jewelry/trinket box. Some of my Mi'kmaq (USA spelling, MicMac) friends use this to store medicinal herbs for teas, or tobacco for smoking in traditional pipes - as well as cedar, sweetgrass and sage for smudging.
