Pipe Size: 1/2" iron (sturdy but not too heavy) Pipe & Shelf Size: 6" pipe - 6" shelf (snug) 7" pipe - 6" shelf 9" pipe - 8" shelf 10" pipe - 8" shelf with extra room, or a very snug 10" shelf 12" pipe - 10" or 12" shelf (snug) Each pipe length will lose about 1/2" because the pipe will be threaded into the flange and end cap. So a 7" pipe will only have about 6.5" of board space. Note that boards you get from Lowe's and Home Depot are LESS WIDE than what you think. A 2x6" board is actually 1.25" x 5.25" ... the board starts out 2x6 but loses .75" on each dimension as it goes through the planing process so you get a straight board.
