Description: For your consideration is a set of four (4) original, authentic ORB student art journals from the Chouinard Art Institute from 1959 and 1960, a holy grail for collectors of the early work of contemporary artists, including Ed Ruscha, Mark Rothko, Willem de Kooning, Franz Kline, Hans Hoffmann, and Joe Goode, among other notables. Incredible artifact for multiple reasons. Chouinard Art Institute is known as an incubator for students who went on to form the California Cool school of artists, as well as a who's who of American contemporary artists, who have gone on to critical acclaim and commercial success. The editor of ORB was Ed Ruscha, who contributed artwork and graphic design, alongside Mark Rothko (layout), Willem de Kooning (lettering), Hans Hoffman and Franz Kline (paste-up), and more. Talk about a who's who all-star lineup of contemporary artists. Stunning examples of art and graphic design, as well as advertising art and copy, these zine-like newsletters featured the early works of these artists while they were still students. One of them features a full-page drawing. Ruscha was also one of the scholarship recipients for the 1959-60 school year, which was announced in one of these issues. This set includes Vol. 1, No. 1; Vol. 1, No. 2; Vol. 1, No. 3; and Vol. 1, No. 5 A true collectible in every way, so few of these original art ephemera have survived, and fewer still, fully intact and in such good shape. In fact, Vol. 1 No. 2 is even part of the permanent collection of the Getty (see screencap) and was exhibited in Pacific Standard Time, the comprehensive survey of Los Angeles artists from the mid century. Overall good vintage condition for being over 60 years old with typical yellowing from age, as depicted, but the colors and graphic designs are still vibrant and sharp, and the journals are structurally intact. Approx. measurements in inches (unfolded): 22" x 17" You'd be hard-pressed to find this anywhere else, especially in this condition and in this quantity, so don't miss this opportunity. A must-have for the serious collector of Ed Ruscha, Mark Rothko, and the other artists represented. Final sale, no refunds, cancellations, or exchanges. Price is firm. No best offers, please. Sold as a set for this bundled price. No inquiries about splitting them up, please. It's incredibly difficult to find just one of these at all, much less four, so don't miss out. In all likelihood, only a handful of these remain in existence, since they are more susceptible to being discarded. This is why it was deemed worthy to make it in the permanent collection of a world-class institution like the Getty. Shipping notes: Will ship folded, as originally distributed.
