Description: This is a beautiful pair of Leland Blue Stones which are 150 year old slag glass from the iron smelting industry. These pieces look glassy dull green on the outside but have a beautiful translucent color when you hold them up to a light. Due to the action of the waves these specimens almost look like beach glass. They can be polished to a beautiful shine if desired. This also brings out the translucent effect much more clearly. In the 1800s iron furnaces were often set up along the shores of the Great Lakes in Michigan. During the smelting process in a huge furnace, raw iron ore was super heated to remove any natural impurities. When the impurities cooled, they produced a glass like slag. These samples were gathered from the shoreline and were naturally tumbled and washed by the waves. The colors of Leland Blue stone vary between different shades of blue, green, gray, purple and sometimes white.
