Based on the Mei, this blade was originally owned by a person called Yamagawa Akitada during 1932, which suggests this is a very early 現代刀Gendai-to (modern traditionally made Nihonto) made during or before very early Showa period. as shown in the photos, this is a very large and strong blade that reminds me of 鄞王刀Kinno-to oversized Katana used by 鄞王党Kinno-to Imperialism Samurai during Bakumatsu period. It has a bare blade weight of slightly over 1kg (~2lbs 4oz), with a 控え目釘穴Hikae-Mekugi-ana "secondary Mekugi-ana pin hole" for mounting and using a second Mekugi together with the major Mekugi, to handle the tremendous impact caused by the heavy blade body during a strong cut. as shown in the photos, the blade is overall decently forged with very few forging imperfection despite the size. It has a decent Midare style Hamon with some lovely round 飛び焼きTobiyaki (outlier Hamon area that's seperate from the main Hamon), that combined with the other Hamon, looks like the night moon above roaring waves. The Koshirae is also decently made with proper craftmanship. The Tsuka is large and solid, with a proper curvature in shape for solid gripping, wrapped with a single full piece of Samegawa for extra strength, mounted with iron 蜻蛉Tonbo dragonfly motif Fuchikashira that matches with the fine 蜻蛉Tonbo dragonfly larquer work on the Saya. The Saya is also mounted with metal Koi-guchi and Kojiri fittings for strength. The Tsuba is a lovely 菊Kiku chrysan motif large iron Sukashi Tsuba —— everything was properly made and well fitted together, apparently for "practical use" by a martial artist. As stated above, this particular set is currently not in a "ready" condition and needs some project works/ restorations, please see photos for details, but here's a rough list: - the blade is partially out of polish, there's some nicks on the Kissaki, all fixable during next polish - the Saya is cracked on where it's glued - Habaki is slightly off the shape, need restoration or just make a new one a perfect candidate for Budo practitioners or Tameshigiri after proper restoration Measurements: Nagasa: ~75.5cm or 29.7inches Moto-Haba: ~35mm Saki-Haba: ~23.5mm Moto-Gasane: ~8mm Saki-Gasane: -5mm Regarding the whatabout/quality/condition, please carefully examine all the photos and make your own best judgement, the description provided is no more than a rough personal interpretation of the item and subject to inaccuracy/ omission —— all sales are final
