Her journey in the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race began in 1980, when she placed 18th. In 1981, she realized she needed to raise and train her own sled dogs. She relocated to Shaktoolik and Teller, Alaska, and collaborated with Joe Garney to form a powerful partnership. On March 20, 1985, Riddles made history as the first woman to win the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. Her victory was hailed as a watershed moment in sports history, helping to shift preconceptions about women's talents in competitive sports.
