Mercanti, the 12th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint. Mercanti’s career began as a sculptor-engraver in 1974 and spanned 36 years until his retirement in 2010. During his time at the U.S. Mint Mercanti is credited with designing over 100 U.S. coins and medals, more than anyone in U.S. history.With access to the original plasters Mercanti recreated Saint Gaudens classic design!!!The obverse depicts Lady Liberty encircled by a ring of stars, holding a torch and an olive branch. The sun and its rays rising behind her while the Capitol building sits off in the distance. Also on the obverse are the inscriptions, “LIBERTY” and “MMXXII“.On the reverse an eagle is in flight.
