Description: For many of us, it's hard to believe that 25 years have already passed since Canada's $2 banknote was discontinued and the $2 coin was introduced. For the same 25 years, a group of scarce "BRX" prefix replacement $2 banknotes has been held in the vaults of the Royal Canadian Mint, awaiting this milestone. This two-part set includes an original $2 banknote dated 1986 (discontinued in 1996) together with a commemorative issue 2021 one ounce pure silver $2 coin with a 24-karat selective gold overlay. The $2 banknote with the prefix "BRX" is much rarer than a regular issue $2 note. When banknotes are printed for the Bank of Canada, they are carefully accounted for by the serial numbers. If a sheet of notes is imperfect or damaged in the printing process, it is "replaced" and accounted for with a special series of "replacement notes." On all Birds series Canadian denominations, the letter "X" was used as the third letter of the serial number prefix to show that it was a replacement note. Because replacement notes are much scarcer than regular-issue notes, most uncirculated replacement notes command a significant collector premium.
