Description: "Hill of Crosses, Lithuania" Source: Soviets, published in 2001 Description Title: "MARCH 1991 The Hill of Crosses in Lithuania, a country invaded and occupied so many times over the centuries that its people came to define their nationality by their Roman Catholicism; it alone has remained constant in their lives. It sets them apart in ways that language and social organization do not seem to satisfy. Surrounded by Protestants to the north and Orthodox to the east and southwest, Lithuania shares a small frontier with Poland. But a long history of bloody territorial claims and counterclaims has left no love between the coreligionists. When Lithuania was forcibly annexed by the Soviet Union in 1940, the only (barely) permissible means of expressing nationalism was by the display of religious symbols. There are different versions of the story of the Hill of Crosses, but this much seems clear: In flat, agricultural north central Lithuania, a small hill, only a hundred yards in diameter and no more than fifty feet high, sits by itself among the grainfields. At its highest point, local people always kept a small crucifix. Sometime after 1940, the authorities had it removed. In the dark of night, another cross would always take its place. This game was played often over the years, but never escalated until perestroika time, when several crosses would replace every one removed. Like the brooms of the sorcerer's apprentice, the number of crosses grew geometrically for every one removed. By 1987, thousands of crosses of every kind, big and small, Catholic, Protestant, and Orthodox, covered the hill. When I first visited in March 1991, there were hundreds of thousands of crosses, and a cottage industry had developed nearby, selling more crosses to pilgrims and tourists." Unique and distinctive.
