Description: Test Wormwood (Artemisia absinthium) Check out our other listings! Wormwood is a perennial herb that is best known as a component of the legendary spirit absinthe, but it is also used for flavoring in other spirits and wines such as bitters, bäsk (a Swedish-style liquor), and vermouth. Its name is derived from its historical use as an antiparasitic. It has long been used medicinally for pain management, reduction of swelling, and as a digestive aid due to its bitter agents (absinthin and anabsinthin). Also used commercially in cosmetics and vermouth. The foliage of the Wormwood plant is silvery-gray and aromatic, and makes for a beautiful addition to any garden! Wormwood Germination Guide Wormwood seeds can be sown indoors or outdoors. Note that since the seeds are so small (smaller even than the periods at the end of these sentences!) we recommend starting them inside. If sowing outdoors, sow seeds when the soil temperature is between 55°F and 65°F. Select a sunny location with well drained soil and scatter the seeds on the surface of the soil. Wormwood seeds require light in order to germinate, so do not cover them with soil. Water the seeds regularly, taking care not to disturb them or wash them away with excess water. Germination should occur within 2-4 weeks, and the seedlings can be thinned to one plant ever 18-20 inches once they have obtained their first set of true leaves. If starting indoors, select the soil and container in which to start your seeds. For soil, use a seed starting mix for the best results. You may also use a soil-less potting mix, which is cheaper and widely available at most garden centers. For the container, use seed trays or small pots around three or four inches tall. Fill your pots or seed trays with potting mix to within 1/2 inch of the top. Scatter 3 to 5 seeds per seed tray cell or pot on top of the soil. Wormwood seeds require light for germination, so be sure not cover them with soil. Place the trays/pots on a sunny windowsill or, ideally, beneath a grow light. You can even place them beneath a fluorescent light if a grow light is not available. The seeds germinate best when soil temperatures are between 55°F and 65°F, so you won't need to place them on a heat mat. Water the seeds regularly, taking care not to disturb them or wash them away with excess water. To avoid any potential issues, consider watering from the bottom or lightly misting the soil with water from a spray bottle. Germination should occur within 7 to 21 days. Once the seedlings have developed first set of true leaves you can transplant them to bigger pots, containers, or straight into the ground in your garden. Once established, Wormwood is a hardy plant that, if properly cared for, will thrive in your garden for many years. Don't worry too much when it withers away during the winter--it's just dormant and will return come spring!
