By the same decree, the new coins were divided into three categories: silver, gold and bronze. At the same time, the capital was moved from Nafplio to Athens to make the symbolic connection with the glorious ancient past.The Royal Mint of Athens was inaugurated in 1836, but until 1841 only bronze subdivisions of the drachma were minted there. The minting of silver coins began in 1842. Only large denominations of 20 and 40 drachmas were minted in gold and in a limited edition.
