2 EXQUISITE THEODORE HAVILAND LIMOGES GOLD TRIMMED DEMITASSE CUP & SAUCER SETS

Description: Maker: On the reverse of these two lovely demitasse cup and saucer sets is the red backstamp number 33 of Theodore Haviland, one of the great Limoges firms at the turn of the last century. Age: This mark was in use between 1903 and 1925. That means this set is at least 93 years old, perhaps older. Source: third edition of the Collector's Encyclopedia of Limoges Porcelain by Mary Frank Gaston. Design: In keeping with the exceptionally high quality that made the company's porcelain so famous, and so coveted, all four pieces are beautifully hand painted on thin, translucent porcelain in a wonderful design of tiny pink, yellow and blue roses interspersed with elegant gold daubs. The cup handles are a beautiful mottled gold.The upper edges are also mottled, on one cup more than the other. It's not clear if that is wear or part of the design, but in any case it does not detract from their beauty. Size: The cups are 2 1/4 inches in diameter at the opening and 2 1/4 inches tall. The saucers are 5 inches in diameter. Condition: All four pieces are in excellent condition, especially considering their age and fragile material. There are no chips, cracks, nicks, stains, repairs, crazing, utensil marks or wear. There are some dark spots on the rims as expected in porcelain of this age, and a tiny embedded dark spot on the side of one cup.
