Description: 2 Antique Etchings On Silk with Remarque JLG Ferris C Bodenhausen Der Garabedian. Matched pair as both frame measure 15 3/4" x 20" and visible artwork is about 8" x 12". Both have hand drawn remarques lower left corner. One is signed on the art JLG Ferris Etch After A Maignan and is hand signed on matte J Ferris. The other is signed C Bodenhausen. Labels on back show these were from Fenway Art Center in Boston. See the various artist histories below. The silk is showing some wear at the ends but the artwork displays fine. Frames and glass are both solid and sturdy having been professionally done at The Fenway Art Center. Please see my 12 detailed photos. Very unusual to see these on silk. Cuno Von Bodenhausen is known for figure painting.Bodenhausen was born in Witzenhausen in the province of Hessen. He received his art instruction at the Munich Academy where he was a pupil under Wilhelm Lindenschmit. Of this professor the critic S. Benjamin wrote: "He is inspired by noble thought and high artistic qualities in rendering character, especially in historical compositions."In 1877 the artist began to exhibit publicly, becoming known as a figure painter of romantic and sentimental types. Jean Leon Gerome Ferris (1863 - 1930) Jean Leon Gerome Ferris was active/lived in Pennsylvania. Jean Ferris is known for history, genre, illustration, etching.Jean Leon Gerome Ferris was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1863, when the Civil War was raging. Historical painter, illustrator, etcher, he created work that is in Congress Hall in Philadelphia.Ferris was the pupil of his father, the portrait painter Stephen James Ferris, a devotee of Jean Leon Gerome and Mariano Fortuny. His mother's brother was Thomas Moran, so the atmosphere for an adolescent was fine art. He studied in Spain in 1881, and in 1884, under William Adolphe Bouguereau at the Julian Academy in Paris, where he received the impetus to concentrate on historical painting. Giragos Der Garabedian (1892 - 1980) Giragos Der Garabedian was active/lived in Vermont, Massachusetts / Armenia. Giragos Garabedian is known for landscape and marine painting, teaching.The artist was the proprietor of the Fenway Art Center in the Back Bay center of Boston and well known for his landscapes and marines. He worked primarily in oils but has done some work in watercolors and tempera. Throughout the years he had numerous showings of his paintings, many of which were done in the Massachusetts art colony of Rockport.Der Garabedian was sent alone by his parents to the United States at the age 15 from Harpoot, Armenia; they, and other Armenians, remained to face the persecution and eventual massacre by the Turks that took place in the late 1800s and early 1900s. He worked at various jobs to subsist and pay for art studies at the Cooper Union in New York City.
