Description: Two rare 1910 maps published by Wm. P. Northrup of Buffalo, for the Federal Telephone & Telegraph Co.; both show Independent Long Distance Telephone lines in Western, NY. The darker booklet shows wear -- date stamps, and minor stains -- but the fold out map itself in excellent condition. The back "shows the marvelous growth of Independent telephone companies as compared to their only competitor...". A sampling of random Western NY towns compares Bell subscribers with Independent customers. The light green booklet is in good condition and its map is in excellent condition. It was also published in 1910, but instead of showing the competition (Bell), it shows the population of various towns and compares that to the number of Independent Long Distance Company customers. I measured this map at about 28 1/2". Both rare maps afford a glimpse of the time when long distance lines were uncommon, and Bell Telephone had not yet gained the market share in Western NY.
