Description: This is another of my royalty items collection. It is a small fine hard paste porcelain vase in the Sevres manner with a hand painted portrait of the Empress Josephine Bonaparte. Many artists painted portraits of the French Emperor Napoleon's Empress. This very fine hand painted miniature of the young empress is styled after the painting of the Empress in a décolleté white dress pinned at the shoulder with gold pins which are slightly raised, which was painted by Daniel Saint in 1806. NOTE also the raised paint of the pearl earring, the slightly raised band and the pearls woven into her hair and the pearls in her double strand necklace. The violet pink raised framing of the portrait was a favorite color of the Empress. It shows well against the dark cobalt blue of the rest of the body of the vase. The ring of gold hand-painted fleur de lys, over the same violet base color, at the top of the vase and again around the base as well as the hand painted gold laurel wreath in the Napoleon period style on the reverse of the vase are important signs of her royalty standing in France. There are also hand painted gold flowers and designs scattered over the balance of the blue of the vase. (Please see photos -difficult to photograph with light and flash reflections.)Hallmark: This vase is signed in underglaze blue with the mark of the Gebruder Heubach (Heubach Brothers. This mark was used in the 3rd quarter of the 19th century in what is now Lichte, Germany. The company was started in 1806 in Lichte, when it belonged to Thuringia. The company changed hands in 1822, and was bought in 1840 by the Heubach brothers. They were able to get their own license to produce porcelain circa the 1850s, previously they bought their porcelain blanks from other manufacturers. The lower symbol is a G over H under a blazing sun/arrows all surrounded by a circle. It also has the number 31 in blue and a tiny ?A on the rim.Condition: The vase is in perfect condition with no chips, no cracks and no repairs. The painting of the portrait is in mint condition with no flaws. The raised violet pink framing around the portrait is complete and perfect. The pearls around her neck, in her hair and at her ear are raised, complete and perfect. The hand painted gold fleur de lys surrounding the top and bottom of the vase are complete and perfect. The some of the overall gold designs and the gold laurel wreath have some wear. I have priced it taking this wear into consideration.Size: The vase is 5 3/8" in height, about 1" in diameter at the top, about 4 1/4" in diameter across the center and 2 3/4" in diameter across the base. It weighs 209 grams (about 1/2 lbs.)Shipping: All special pieces are triple wrapped, double boxed, tracked and insured for delivery to you.
