Description: This beautiful Oil on Board landscape in the Hudson River School theme, by Edmund Darch Lewis (1835 - 1910) is in excellent condition, with no evidence of cracks or scratches in the paint or any damage to the wood. No observed evidence of repairs. The paint is excellent, with no signs of restoration. The framed dimensions of the painting are 31 1/4 inches high X 20 1/4 inches wide. The unframed dimensions are 25 3/4 inches high X 14 1/2 inches wide. The painting depicts a church and houses at the foot of a mountain, with a river and a waterfall with cattle drinking below. There are foot paths on each side of the river, with towering trees in the foreground. The painting illustrates Lewis' formula for landscapes which include a foreground, a middle ground and a background receding into infinity. The painting is signed "Edmund D Lewis, 1876" in the lower left corner. The painting was exhibited at the Newman Galleries, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the oldest art gallery in Philadelphia, and was purchased from a collector on Cape Cod, Ma. Edmund Darch Lewis was born in 1835 in Philadelphia, Pa. He was educated in private schools, and at age 15, began studying painting with the German-born landscapest Paul Weber of the Hudson River School. At age 19, in 1854, he first exhibited at Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and later at the National Academy of Design in New York in 1860. He was a prolific artist whose views of Pennsylvania, New York and and New England were avidly collected by Philadelphia art patrons. At times, sales of his paintings exceeded those of all other painters in America. For two decades, he traveled extensively to the White Mountains and painted landscapes of mountains, rivers and lakes. His documented paintings of the area range from 1857 to 1876.
