Description: This amazing rattle top Tlingit Native Alaskan basket dates to 1851 (at least by family tradition). It has a very finely woven design of chevrons, crosses and diamonds on its sides and a spiral pattern on its lid centered within a border of Greek key design. The basket has some splits in the lid with no missing elements (see photos). The basket came to me with an owner's note indicating that the it was a gift to a Great Grandmother in the 19th c. in Valdez, Alaska. The note says the date is 1851 and there is a record of an Alfred Iles (then In the British Navy) In Alaska in the 19th c. It may be the basket had some age when Iles acquired it or may have been created as late as 1870's. The basket is 5" in diameter and is 3.75" tall. This is one of the finest baskets we have ever handled. SA2D-374 .
