This unit acts like a standard open carrier under normal driving conditions making it unobtrusive. Once a tire looses traction, or the terrain changes, the helical cut gears mesh together transferring torque to the high traction tire. Once traction on both sides resumes, the carrier goes back to normal operation. The carrier case is forged steel for strength and reliability. Since this unit does not have clutches and steels, it is completely maintenance free!
