Roger Fenton's photograph Pasha and Bayadere is a fascinating image in its own right and is an expression of a more general Orientalist craze that grew steadily stronger during the nineteenth century in Europe. In his rich and detailed study, Baldwin explains how this image of a seated man and a dancing woman embodies themes and motifs that can be found in the work of nineteenth-century artists from Eugene Delacroix to John Frederick Lewis to Alfred Lord Tennyson. He has also brought to light significant new information about the life and career of Fenton, the important Victorian photographer best known for his photographs of the Crimean War." Additional Information: Gordon Baldwin (1939 - 2020) was an independent curator, a recipient of the Rome Prize for his architectural drawings, and a former curator in the Department of Photographs at the J. Paul Getty Museum. He was the curator for many exhibitions at the Getty Museum, including Grave Testimony: Photographs of the Civil War (1992); Roger Fenton:The Orientalist Suite (1996); Nadar/Warhol; Paris/New York (1999); The Man in the Street, Eugène Atget in Paris (2000); and Gustave Le Gray, Photographer (2002). His publications include Looking at Photographs, A Guide to Technical Terms (1991, re-issued in 2009); Roger Fenton: Pasha and Bayadère (1996); In Focus: Eugène Atget (2000); and Gustave Le Gray, 1820–1884 (2002). Before his long-standing tenure at the Getty, Baldwin attended Amherst College, graduating in 1960, followed by Harvard Law School (1960-62), and finally completing his masters degree at Harvard’s Graduate School of Design (1963-65). Immediately after his Ivy League years, Baldwin became a fixture of Andy Warhol’s factory in New York during the late 1960s, and 30 years later he would curate the 1999 exhibition Nadar/Warhol: Paris/New York, a show juxtaposing the work of the 19th-century French photographer Gaspard-Félix Tournachon, known as Nadar, with the photographs of Andy Warhol, noting that each “was the most important visual artist of his time to set out deliberately to create celebrity for their subjects”. He was a leading British photographer and instrumental in founding the Photographic Society (later the Royal Photographic Society). In 1854, he was commissioned to document events occurring in Crimea, where he became one of a small group of photographers to produce images of the final stages of the Crimean War.
