First C-17 takes off at Long Beach Airport on a test flight to Edwards Air Force Base, California. The new United States Air Force/McDonell Douglas airlifter lifted off on its inaugural flight Sunday, September 15, piloted by Bill Casey, McDonell Douglas, with Lieutenant Colonel George London as copilot. The flight of two hours, 24 minutes marked the beginning of a two-year flight test program for the C-17, to be conducted by a combined test force that includes Air Force, Army, Marine Corps and McDonnell Douglas personnel. The C-17 is designed to carry large combat equipment, troops and cargo, or humanitarian aid, across international distances and deliver them directly to austere airfields anywhere in the world.
