His father was moved from teaching Mathematics to being a dock laborer. Lu Hong was heavily influenced by his uncle Ting Shao Kuang, who was one of the founders of the Yunnan School. An art style that was developed in China during the Cultural Revolution, it represents an organic, rebellious form of expression for artists who were sent to Yunnan province to produce government propaganda. Instead the artists began blending Eastern & Western elements to produce something completely new. Consisting of rich, colorful figurative artwork with a blend of exotic, erotic, and even religious elements, this style was first exposed to the west in the late 1970’s and early 80’s. About the Yunnan School Yunnan School is an art style/movement that developed in China from the 1960’s through the 1980’s. The name refers from from the southwestern frontier province of the same name that had existed as a culturally diverse region since ancient times. During the cultural revolution, many young urban intellectuals were sent to rural areas like Yunnan province to be taught a simple agrarian way of life that would help support the communist economy. A handful of talented artists were also sent here to produce posters and propaganda for the government.DiversityYunnan province is a semi-tropical, mountainous region with abundant resources and rich ecological life. Ironically, the artists who were sent there to be controlled, became inspired by the colorful, religious and ethnically diverse cultures. Several of these artists like Teng Fie Jiang, and Ting Shao Kuang began infusing Western techniques and styles like Cubism and Art Nouveau with some of the cultural and religious traditions of various tribes and people in the region. The ArtThe result is an exotic mix of of rich, heavy color and beautiful contemporary female forms combined with traditional symbolism and customs. A National Geographic reporter was among the first Westerners to see this amazing work and was able to set up a showing in Hong Kong where it was met with critical acclaim. Later after the Cultural revolution ended, several of these artists came to the US where they continued to paint and expose this new and beautiful style to the public. We have a wonderful sampling of serigraphs and paintings from the Yunnan school including Tie Feng Jang, Ting Shao Kuang, Lu Hong, Liu Ke Ming, and others. Lu Hong was born in Qin Huangdao, a coastal city in northeastern China. Weathering the harsh times that marked China's oppressive Cultural Revolution of the 1960s, Hong graduated high school and was already exhibiting a great talent for painting when a visit by his uncle sealed the boy's fate: Uncle Ting Shao Kuang was a great painter himself, indeed one of the respected leaders of the world-renowned contemporary Chinese art movement known as the Yunnan School. With his mentor on board, Hong went on to attend the most prestigious art school in China, the Central Academy of Design and Arts in Beijing, followed by a scholarship to the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Following his uncle's continued artistic success, Hong moved to the United States in 1986. Inspired by artists like Paul Klee, Modigliani, and Picasso and the music of Chopin, Mueller, and Wagner, Hong continued to expand his horizons, finding his own unique voice and style after years spent suppressed by China's Communist regime. One of Hong’s specialties is creating his multi-faceted original paintings on rice paper – an extremely delicate and temperamental material. He uses a variety of water-based mediums, such as watercolor, of course, along with gouache, Japanese mineral paints, and Chinese stone paints. His composition takes form as an initial line drawing which is carefully rendered on the rice paper. He uses liquid acrylic to adhere this sheet to another sheet of rice paper, then mounts the artwork onto his painting board. Drawing the lines again over his initial sketching, painting over and over these fine lines with his chosen palette, and meticulously filling in all the smallest details, the finished artwork is cut from the painting board. Since having his work introduced by Segal Fine Art during the New York Art Expo and Los Angeles Art Expo in 1987, Lu Hong has become one of the most acclaimed contemporary Chinese artists in the world. His works have been exhibited in Japan, France, Holland, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Canada. He has had shows in most major American cities, including New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Boston, Washington, Baltimore, San Francisco, Portland, Seattle, San Diego, Houston, and Honolulu. Lu Hong's works and exhibitions have been reviewed by many local and international publications, including Art in America, Art News, Architectural Digest, Artists (Taiwan), The New York Times, Chicago Tribune, L.A. Weekly, World News, and China Daily News. In 1989, Segal Fine Art published the book "Lu Hong Life and Art," by Wen-Kuang Chang and Jeffrey Goldberg.
