He was a stud in the late 80s early 90s and when it was time for new contracts he dove headfirst into deferred compensation which was not yet very common. Bobby retired for good in 2001, but due to his deferred contracts the Mets still pay him 1.19 Million every year through 2035!!! He did the same thing with an Orioles contract who will continue to pay him 500k per year through 2028.
