Description: 10/24/1987 Man o' War program from Aqueduct Theatrical defeating Le Glorieux. Theatrical, the nation's best grass horse in training, scored perhaps the most predictable victory of the New York season when he registered a professional 2 1/2-length victory over Le Glorieux and Midnight Cousins in the $585,000 Man o' War Stakes yesterday at Aqueduct. Theatrical, sent off at odds of 3-10 against seven unaccomplished rivals, was second most of the way behind Midnight Cousins, a 42-to-1 shot who galloped along on a moderate pace. Turning for home, Theatrical bid for the lead, took about a furlong to wear down Midnight Cousins, and then drew off without much urging from Pat Day. Le Glorieux, a German-raced, English-bred 3-year-old son of an Irish-based stallion, was third most of the way and passed Midnight Cousins in the final sixteenth of a mile to be second by half a length. It was six lengths back from Midnight Cousins, who held well for third, to La Petite Flo. Sure Dad, Dawn o' the Dance, Tertiary Zone and Free Colony completed the finish in that order. Theatrical, a 5-year-old son of Nureyev and the Sassafras mare Tree of Knowledge, was bred in Ireland by his owner, Bert Firestone. Theatrical, who paid $2.60 for $2 to win, ran the mile and three-eighths yesterday in 2:15 2/5. The victory was his 9th in 21 career starts and raised his earnings to $2,043,627, making him the 25th thoroughbred to reach the $2 million mark. Theatrical, a winner of six graded grass stakes this year, is expected to close out his campaign as the favorite in the $2 million Breeders' Cup Turf at Hollywood Park Nov. 21. This was an exceptionally weak field for the Man o' War, which lost horses to the richer Rothman's International at Woodbine last Sunday and the richer Washington D.C. International at Laurel next Saturday. Also, no one was particularly keen on running his horse against Theatrical. Le Glorieux was the only other Grade I winner in the field, and he earned his stripes in Dusseldorf, West Germany. ''The winner was the best,'' said Alain Lequeux, who was flown in from France to ride Le Glorieux. ''He's a good horse. My horse ran his race. No excuses.'' I will combine shipping on multiple purchases. Congratulations to Secretariat on the 50th anniversary of his winning the Triple Crown (Kentucky Derby / Preakness Stakes / Belmont Stakes)
