Description: Penn State Upests No. 4 W. Virginia By Ken Denlinger October 23, 1983 The defending national champion returned to the college football elite today. Rebuilding, if such a thing ever is necessary at a school without a losing season since the second quarter of the New Deal, Penn State still had more than enough for a 41-23 upset of fourth-ranked West Virginia. The Lions scored very early and very often against a previously very good defense in dealing the Mountaineers their first loss in seven games. They very likely will re-enter the top 20 with their fifth straight victory after three early losses. In extending its unbeaten streak against West Virginia to 28, State got three touchdown passes from the game's lesser-heralded quarterback, Doug Strang, and held an 11-point lead at halftime. The first time its leading rusher, freshman D. J. Dozier, touched the ball, early in the fourth quarter, he took a screen pass 47 yards for the victory-clinching touchdown.
