Description: 1983 Press Photo Workers and Archaeologists at Erie Canal Excavation in Oswego This is an original press photo. Erie Canal While excavating for a new sewer overflow line to serve the North Side, workmen uncovered part of the wall of the abandoned Oswego branch of the Erie Canal, which had been covered over since the mid 1920s. The canal was abandoned about 1917. Numerous artifacts were found during excavation, including old clay pipes. Gordon DeAngelo of the Department of Transportation, an archaeologist, stands on wall. At left, in back is Vicki B. Ford, director of the Canal Museum. Standing with chart is archaeologist Marjorie Pratt. Project is being supervised by O'Brien & Gere, engineers, near the intersection of Erie Boulevard East and Oswego Boulevard.Photo measures 8.25 x 11.25inches. Photo is dated 05-17-1983.
