On Sunday, the New Orleans Museum of Art will open what Director E. John Bullard describes as "the most important exhibition of Oriental art ever presented at the museum." That exhibition, "A Myriad of Autumn Leaves: Japanese Art From the Kurt and Millie Gitter Collection," promises New Orleanians a myriad of aesthetic pleasures. The Gitter collection, amassed by a New Orleans physician and his wife, is regarded as one of this country's finest private collections of art from the so-called Edo period (1615-1868), a time of highly diverse cultural activity in Japan. The exhibit, which surveys the entire range of painting during the Edo period, includes hanging scrolls and screens that have been handsomely brush-painted with black and colored inks. Also featured are ceramic vessels dating from the fourth century until the present, plus a number of wooden Buddhist and Shinto sculptures.
