This is an original press photo. ....Padre Island National Seashore releases newly hatched Ridley turtle 7/28. Legend has it that eating Ridley turtle eggs can enhance sexual prowess and the meat and hides also have been popular. Consequently, the species has neared extinction. This year, in cooperation with the Mexican Government, the National Park Service started a crash program to reverse the rapid decline in the sea turtle population. The turtle eggs have been brought to Padre where they can be protected. The little turtles can grow to as much as 100 pounds. Photo measures 8.25 x 10inches. Photo is dated 07-28-1978.
