Great Britain (Old church). The Norman conquerors built buildings to last. This is Durham Cathedral in the town of Durham, Northern England. It was started in 1093 and is considered one of England's finest Romanesque structures. Engineers today say the massive pillars of Durham would support two cathedrals the size of this one. At one time the cathedral served also as a fortress. It is on the site of a Saxon church built as a shrine to St. Cuthbert whose body was brought to Durham by monks fleeing a Viking raid. Visitors to Durham also traditionally include Durham Castle which was begun by William I after the Battle of Hastings. Photo measures 8 x 10inches. Photo is dated 4-27-1978.
