1978 Kawasaki Verified Z1R TC Motorcycles

Description: Hello, My name is Johnny Bohmer I am offering for sale my unique, rare and significant collection of 1978 Kawasaki KZ1000 Z1R Turbocharged and Supercharged motorcycles. I have been an avid car and motorcycle racer since the early 1970's,I'm no stranger to extremely fast vehicles. I always had a soft spot in my heart for Kawasaki's and owned and raced many over the last four decades. I acquired these forced induction Kawasaki's over the years but now it is time for someone else to enjoy and curate these marvelous and stunning motorcycles. This amazing collection includes the largest "verified" grouping of authentic Z1R TC motorcycles currently available for sale worldwide. For any serious motorcycle collector looking for the original Turbo muscle bike, look no further. The collection features a total of (10) 1978 Kawasaki Z1R forced induction motorcycles: Please note, the (#xxx) number in front of each bike description is a inventory item number, and not related to the fram, engine, or title.(7) 1978 Kawasaki Z1R TCs in varying conditions, from fully restored to unrestored. All of these iconic motorcycles come with complete paperwork and provenance, preserving their historic importance.(5) of the seven "verified" TC’s are cosmetically, mechanically period correct restorations, all five are fully sorted and ready to ride or display, out of the five (2) of them are extremely rare “log manifold” Molly TC 1.5 models and are only (2) VIN numbers apart. (1) of the "verified" seven TC’s is equipped with the Holy Grail “ Media Test Bike” options which was special ordered and is believed to be the only example left known to exist. This is a fully restored and very rare 1978 Kawasaki Z1R “Media Test Bike option” Stage-3 performance Molly TC-2.(2) of the seven "verified" TC's are unrestored and full descriptions are below.Additionally, the collection includes (3) more motorcycles: a fully restored Stardust Metallic 1978 Z1R TC “clone”a unrestored 1978 Z1R TC Molly “clone”1978 CUSTOM SUPERCHARGED Z1R This SUPERCHARGED Z1R was purchased from the original owner and then brought back to life after sitting for almost three decades in a garage. You will be hard pressed to find a cooler badass, head turning and show stealing motorcycle than this one!!This is an extraordinary opportunity to own a piece of motorcycle history. Out of the “519” Z1R TCs produced in 1978-1979 by Turbo Cycle Corp., only around 90 are known to still exist today. Many were converted into drag bikes and met their demise through racing, making these remaining original Z1R TC’s sought after and incredibly rare. Of course there may be a “few barn” find verified TC’s still out there but due to the rarity of these motorcycles the bushes have been beaten pretty hard in search of them. It is the consensus of the Z1R TC experts and enthusiasts that the number of “barn finds” would just be a handful if any.The verification of the (7) Z1R TCs was obtained from the Turbo Cycle Corp. "sales registration log" records, including details such as the dealership that sold the TC, frame VIN, engine VIN and original purchaser. Additionally several of the TC’s have the original "Z1R-TC REGISTRATION Warranty and Purchaser Certification" this is a signed and witnessed document that states there is no Warranty. Photos of these documents along with photos of the title and frame/engine vin# 's will be provided in an email to the purchaser once the deposit has been received. Once the purchase is complete all the documents will be given to the buyer. It would take a long time and be nearly impossible to group together a collection like this one. Please keep in mind most of these motorcycles have been restored and period correct parts were installed when available. Some of these units have new paint and no expense was spared to duplicate the original look with the highest quality paint available and the decals are period correct replacements. There may be some parts used in these restorations that are not 100% original but great care and effort was taken to preserve the originality of the incredible machines. Please note several parts including the fueling systems were upgraded on some of the TC's for rideability reasons, the original"rideability" parts that were replaced will be included with the bike when sold.I may entertain restoring the two "VERIFIED" TC's units #654 and #659 to the level of the restored "verified" bikes listed here but this would be seperate from the sale of all the bikes and would be a discussion once all the bikes have been paid for and if I have the time to take the project on. This collection offers a "LEGENDARY WOW" factor and is a significant piece of motorcycle history. Please view the photos and videos for detailed descriptions of each bike. All motorcycles in this collection are titled in Florida and in my name.Below is the detailed information for each Z1R: (#581)1978 Kawasaki Z1R TC-2 STAGE-3 Model: KZ1000-D1 -Frame VIN: KZT00D 00xxxx -Engine VIN: KZT00DE 00xxxx -Original TCC right hand fork ear identification sticker still in place, also includes original owners manual, turbo charged supplement manual -Verified by the Z1R-TC Turbo Cycle Corp. registration and records to be a Molly TC-2 -Frame and engine VIN match TCC's Records -Originally sold on 4-24-1979 by Champion Cycle Center in Chicago Illinois.-2763 Original Miles -ATP (American Turbo-Pak) President John Gleason, Vice-President Jim Ludiker and the ATP team worked directly with President Alan Masek of Turbo Cycle Corp. to develop the 1978 Kawasaki Z1R Turbocharged "TC" motorcycle. -Cycle Magazine Z1R TC Article - https://davestestsandarticles.weebly.com/uploads/4/8/4/5/4845046/cycleaug78kz1000turbo.pdf View more: https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fo/qb7bcb3yfxa9te8h5xtln/AOYeigTK14E3iWeKbUNfuwA?rlkey=120geahfy1h6bsvskomgdv8qu&st=7xd2xed9&dl=0 This absolutely stunning, optioned-out, and extremely rare Z1R TC is the "HOLY GRAIL" of the Z1R TC program, this bike is a verified "REAL" Molly graphics 1978 Kawasaki Z1R TC with the correct engine and frame VIN verified by the TCC records. Three "Media test bikes" 1978 Kawasaki Z1R TC Stage-3 upgraded versions were built by ATP in California by request of TCC for magazine articles and testing. To show the Z1R TC's performance capabilities ATP built a total of "three" stage-3 1978 Z1R TC "Media Test Bikes" which had numerous performance upgrades to add power and engine longevity. However, The "Stage 3" option was offered to dealers by TCC as well but the "Stage 3" upgrade option was not a success due to the extreme cost (2100.00) of the stage 3 kit on top of the 2000.00 turbo kit and only a few were ordered (Total price for a Z1R TC Stage 3 complete bike was 7100.00) resulting in only a handful of these examples being built due to lack of customer/Kawasaki dealers' interest and making this example extremely rare. This 1978 Z1R TC-2 "Stage 3" example was ordered by Champion Cycle in 1979 for a customer with additional upgraded items not included in the already upgraded "Stage 3" package. Items included: "Shim under bucket" valve train and Deep Sump oil pan instead of the "swing gate" hinge upgrade in the stock pan. The "Shim Under Bucket" was good insurance so the shims could not be "SPIT" out under over revving or boost issues which could severely damage the engine. The Deep Sump upgrade added additional volume to the oiling system and eliminated the chance for the oil pump to run dry under hard acceleration as long as the oil level was correct in the sight glass. The 1978 Molly TC-2 mentioned here is believed to be the only "Stage 3" example left known to exist out of the handful that were ordered by dealers. The (3) "Media Test Bikes" used by TCC for media magazine testing articles were eventually sold off to drag racers and the whereabouts of these bikes is unknown but it is doubtful they are intact or survived. The 1978 Z1R TC-2 "Stage-3" TC "Media Test Bikes" were specifically set up as "RINGERS" to be used for numerous motorcycle magazine publication testing articles. All of the "Media Test Bike" packages (around 6 in total including the dealer ordered units) were the only TC Z1R's actually built by APT in California and were personally test ridden by Jay 'Pee Wee" Gleason for quality control purposes, Jay was part owner in ATP at the time of the Turbo Cycle Corp. TC builds. The 1978 Z1R TC-2 stage-3 Z1R TC mentioned here was built by ATP and test ridden by Jay "Pee Wee" Gleason prior to it's delivery to Champion Cycle as this unit was one of ATP/TCC's flagship "Hot Rods" and the reputation of the ATP/TCC upgraded items were on the line so Jim Ludiker the Vice President of ATP said a "push the bike hard" testing was in order at the Orange County International raceway prior to delivery which was Jay "Pee Wee" Gleason's home away from home. John Gleason was the owner of ATP and Jay Gleason was his son as well as part owner in ATP. Jay "Pee Wee" Gleason was the most famous motorcycle test rider in the world during this era and a respected drag racer as well. This particular 1978 Z1R TC-2 was reportedly used in some photoshoots for Turbo Cycle Corp articles and literature but cannot be confirmed as all the "Moly bikes" looked alike and no specific Vin numbers were associated with media print. This motorcycle was disassembled and gone through with a majority of the parts being replaced or refurbished, the project took over a year to complete. A tremendous amount of effort went into the engine restoration. Many other small ancillary items/parts have been replaced all over this motorcycle that are not listed. This motorcycle runs and rides like new and is in "Museum Quality" condition with great detail taken to preserve the legendary, ultra-rare ATP/TCC Stage-3 Z1R "Media Test Bike" upgrades, some additional modern electronics along with the Mikuni HSR-42 carburetor were added for rideability. Don's Cycle Shop was a well known turbo Kawasaki shop that held national drag racing records with Turbo Kawasaki Z1's in the mid 70's, because of Don's record setting turbo skill Turbo Cycle Corp. allowed Don to receive (4) Z1R TC units out of the 519 units produced. This TC-2 was sold by Don's Kawasaki and quickly ended up in the hands of the head mechanic at Don's Kawasaki. The gentleman sadly was killed in the early 80's while riding a Kawasaki GPZ 550 when a drunk driver ran a red light. Don purchased the TC back from the mechanics estate, and the motorcycle sat in the basement of his shop until the early 90's. At this point, another mechanic from Don's shop purchased the TC Molly Z1R and brought the bike back to life. He rode the bike around for a few years as a daily rider, and then parked the bike until I purchased the motorcycle in non-running condition around 2000. I rebuilt the motorcycle and did numerous period correct upgrades including a Kosman frame brace kit and also pulled the matching number engine cases out of the bike and stored them on a shelf to avoid damaging them. This motorcycle has given me tons of joyful riding and racing for many years. I have all the correct parts to put this Z1R TC-2 back to original condition including the correct number engine cases. Please keep in mind the rebuild will require many new parts, I.E. pistons, valves, valve springs, seals, clutches, etc. these and other items will need to be purchased by the buyer. Estimated Punch List for 1978 Z1R TC restoration: The original engine will need to be vapor honed, painted black and completely rebuilt, including welding the crank(highly recommended) Remove incorrect parts and Install all original parts PLEASE NOTE: this Z1R TC currently runs and rides fantastic and has a twin plug head 1200cc fully built engine and trans, 16" LTD rear wheel and a 1975 H2 rear swingarm, "HALF EVIL CUSTOMS" side covers, custom seat pad on original pan and many other upgraded items. ALL of the non "TC" items currently on the bike mentioned here are NOT INCLUDED in the sale will be removed from the bike prior to selling and the bike will be a roller. unless the buyer wants the bike as it sits, This bike will run a 10.90 second bike with a 180 lb rider on a good pass. The price can be discussed if the buyer wants all the additional stuff mentioned here.Set up with a mikuni HSR 42 for rideability reasons(not included).Go through a multitude of small items that will need to be addressed for a restoration. Repaint the bike and install Molly graphics. The front end had been slightly raked by Mr. Turbo sometime in the 1980’s and Mr Turbo also installed the turbo kit as well. The frame rake was done properly and the original OEM Kawasaki VIN numbers were cut out of the old neck and welded back on to the Mr. Turbo raked front end tube.(see photos) When I purchased the bike, it had been sitting for many years and the seller mentioned that the motorcycle had extensive engine work but he had no receipts. Some of the work was evident from the outside but to be sure the engine was dismantled to verify the items in question. Upon dismantling the engine, the bike had a welded crankshaft, heavy duty clutch basket, billet second gear and new Wiseco 8.5:1 flat top turbo pistons which verified what the seller had claimed. The following additional items were performed to the motorcycle, such as a complete top end rebuild, new APE racing clutches with a MRE clutch pusher bearing assembly, new stainless steel exhaust valves, heavy duty springs, valve seals, slotted cam gears, properly degreed in the OEM intake and exhaust cams, new cylinder base gasket, new head gasket, new valve cover gasket, new cam end plugs, new tach drive seal. The carburetor was gone through and jetted it properly for the turbo setup, added new intake manifolds, new exhaust manifold gaskets, properly adjusted the valves, new motor oil and filter. I installed a new Dyna 2000 ignition control module system which allows you to control the amount of RPMs the engine can achieve. This way, the engine cannot overrev and damage itself when it comes onto boost.Additionally the Dyna 2000 gives you the option to pull timing if it is set up with the parts needed. The motorcycle was repainted prior to my ownership, this was done 100% correctly with Kawasaki factory code Stardust Metallic blue paint and period correct pinstriping. Full details of all work and parts added to the original Kawasaki Z1R motor and frame are below. Fully rebuilt motor with the following: New Wiseco 8.5:1 compression pistons Welded crankshaft Billett second gear Upgraded Deep sump oil pan High volume oil pump New Dyna 2000 with rev limiter Heavy duty valve springs New valve seals and tach drive seal New stainless steel exhaust valves and keepers New head gasket & valve cover gasket Slotted cam sprockets Stock cams (106 degree intake, 109 degree exhaust) New APE clutch and springs Heavy duty clutch basket Wastegate set to 6.5 lbs. of boost (which allows you to run the motorcycle with 93 octane fuel as a daily rider) New coils and plug wires New battery Mr. Turbo turbo kit with Rayjay turbo New Stardust Blue Metallic paint with pinstriping Original Z1R TC Wika boost gauge Inside of tank excellent condition New handlebar controls on both sides (left side handlebar controls are not OEM Kawasaki Z1R and do not have the self canceling turn signal device) Handlebars are not the OEM Kawasaki Z1R handlebars but are new and are in the same configuration style as the original bars. TC correct Bendix carburetor with accelerator pump. Gone through and properly jetted for the turbo application. ATP intake manifold New brakes front and rear with full brake system service Charging system working perfectly All electrical items (i.e. turn signals, running lights, brake lights, dash lights, hi/lo beam, horn) work perfectly Front end has been slightly raked with original VIN section added to the new neck tube (see photos) New non-OEM rear shocks New chain and sprockets Electric fuel pump has been removed and the bike is set up for gravity feed which is good for up to 10 lbs. of boost using the Pingle HI FLO petcock. Everything works on the bike as intended Tires in excellent condition Cut rear fender Original seat pan in like new condition Original Kawasaki 739 and 835 keys (BE AWARE THAT IF YOU RUN 10-15 LBS. OF BOOST YOU WILL NEED TO INSTALL A BOOST ACTIVATED PRESSURE SWITCH THAT WILL PULL TIMING AFTER 6.5 LBS. OF BOOST. ADDITIONALLY, YOU SHOULD ADD AN ELECTRIC FUEL PUMP AND RUN A MINIMUM OF 100 OCTANE FUEL, THE MAXIMUM BOOST YOU SHOULD RUN ON THE CURRENT ENGINE SETUP IS 15 LBS) As someone who owns multiple original Kawasaki Z1R TC’s, I purchased this bike to ride around and enjoy so that I did not have to risk damaging one of the original, difficult to find, rare and expensivie TC’s that are steadily increasing in value. This is a fantastic 1978 Z1R Turbo clone and is a great rider, very fast and a real head turner. This motorcycle is perfect for someone that wants the rush of riding a Z1R Turbo. This bike runs and rides fantastic and the slight rake in the front end gives the bike a very stable sensation at speed. The period correct paint and overall fit and finish of the bike is show quality. (#321)1978 Kawasaki Z1R Blower bike Model: KZ1000-D1 Frame VIN: KZT00D0 00xxxx Engine VIN: KZT00DE 00xxxx Original Miles: N/A View link: https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fo/8rfml4bfqvdpbm725301g/ANfLJ3Q2UID0VyNA7M9Q210?rlkey=rkji91mvkvkqezou420upeiqt&st=pe8gbg6u&dl=0 This motorcycle was purchased originally in Ohio and the original owner started the blower project when the bike was basically brand new in 1979. The bike was completed circa 1990 but continued to evolve for several more years. The build was completed circa 1990 and I was told by the original owner that this engine setup can make over 200 HP when a 21lb pulley is installed. The blower makes 8lbs of boost with the pulley currently on the bike which will produce around 140 rwhp but with loads of torque and NO LAG.There are detailed files of all the work completed on this motorcycle and literature for the hilborn injection system, Kinsler fuel supply and "magna blower" system, all of this info comes with this motorcycle. The paint is absolutely amazing and the photos don't do it justice. The paint work was done by Ravenswood paint and body and "Supercharger molly graphics" decals were installed. PLEASE NOTE: I had the bike running on the bench and the engine sounds good (see video) but as I ran the bike on the bench several times I saw some gasket material had blown out of the blower manifold which created an intake air leak and caused the bike to idle high and poorly, then a fuel leak developed from another gasket. These leaks occurred from the age of the gaskets. The blower will need to be removed and the gaskets replaced. There is a fuel leak around the blower gasket which forced me to stop running the bike due to a fire hazard, the gas is dripping directly on the distributor. The ignition is occasionally intermittently sparking, the cap will need to be removed, checked out and cleaned. I was going to remove the entire belt drive ignition system and install a Dyna 2000 which makes things much simpler but decided to keep the nostalgic dual blower/ ignition belt setup. I inspected the cam area and all the valves were in spec, I also replaced the valve cover gasket. This bike has a stator but is currently set up as a "total loss" charging system, this can easily be converted back to a stock charging system with a regulator and some time. There are a few items to address if you want to ride this beast around, at this point I am selling the bike 'AS IS" but if someone wants to pay extra after the initial sale I can finish the bike, this can be discussed. The full build specs and all paperwork will be included with the sale but some of the more notable items are below. - 1327cc MTC Big Block - Magnuson Blower - Hilborn 2-⅞” bore Single Throat Fuel Injector - 8.5:1 compression using turbo flat-top pistons - Kinsler fuel Jet Selector Valve - Stock camshafts with minor port work on head, shim under the bucket - Bronze valve guides - Kosman Frame Stiffening Kit - RoDon Kwik-Shift kit - Welded crankshaft - Stainless steel valve train - Back Cut gears - Custom Front and Rear Wheels - PM Studs - PM Front and Rear Brakes - Macintosh 6in Over Swing Arm - Straight Zoomie Exhaust Pipes with baffles - Custom aluminum inner fender, battery tray, and key switch - Clip On Racing Front Handlebars - Front end raked - Custom Billet Shifter - Chrome Oil Pan - Kerker Oil Cooler -Anti-gravity high output battery -New front and rear tires and heavy duty tubes -Oil and filter changed-New valve cover gasket-Many other items have been added, rebuilt etc. these items are listed in the build info above. This is an incredible old school muscle bike that will turn heads everywhere it goes. I have owned a lot of bikes over the years. I cannot remember anything sounding like this blower Z1R other than a few other blown Kawasaki's I have seen and heard in the past, the exhaust note is INCREDIBLE!!! Nothing says power like a supercharger!!
