Description: 1978 BMW R100RS This 1978 BMW R100RS is finished in the ultra-rare factory Gold Metallic (046) and a very unique ownership history. A fascinating ownership history & story! It’s incredible how personal and meaningful gifts can reflect someone’s achievements and relationships. This motorcycle was first purchased by the world famous musician Billy Joel, as a gift for his late archivist, Jeffery Schock. Joel stated that the gold motorcycle was a striking and fitting tribute to Jeff Schock’s hard work with handling Billy Joel’s impressive collection of gold albums. It's not just a gift; it’s a piece of history that symbolizes the success and camaraderie they shared. I obtained the bike in 2020 and fully serviced the machine to get it back up to road-ready spec; included flushing the brake and fuel systems, rebuilding the carburetors, and fitting new front suspension and brake components. The bike is equipped with progressive fork springs, NGK spark plug wires, an AGM sealed battery. The five-digit odometer shows less than 27k miles, approximately 3k of which have been put on over the course of my 5 years of ownership. This R100RS is offered with the factory owners manual, original cable lock (in frame tube), factory tool roll, both removable hardshell panniers, and a clean VT title in my name. The snowflake aluminum wheels are wrapped with 100/90V19 front and 120/90V18 rear Avon Roadrider AM26 tires that were installed in 2020. A brake system flush was performed, and Spiegler stainless brake lines (available in in black rubberized coating to retain the original appearance) have been fitted throughout the bike, back to front. The front forks were serviced with new seals, wipers, oils, boots, and new Progressive fork springs were fitted. An engine oil and filter change was also performed at that time, along with gearbox, driveshaft, and final drive oils. The fuel hoses, although replaced in 2020, have since seem to become a bit dried out and tend to weep a bit, so I have included brand new genuine replace hoses as a courtesy for the buyer. This is the sought after 40mm exhaust version (more powerful than the restricted CFO versions that were available in this time period) Instrumentation sits behind a full front fairing and includes a 9k-rpm tachometer, a voltmeter, analog clock, and 140-mph speedometer. Power comes from a 980cc air-cooled boxer twin. A five-speed manual transmission sends power to the rear wheel via shaft drive. This machine has spent the past year on a battery tender in cool, dry, storage. I wiped the dust off and it started right up when I pulled it out the other week. A start-up and riding video can be viewed below. I can help facilitate shipping to anywhere in the US (at buyer's cost), as I have been working with the same trusted professional motorcycle shipper for the past 10 years.
