It is dated October 27, 1970 but was not issued then. When, in 1975, the "Peoples Republic" came into being, their first issue of paper money, this one, came out in 1976. They simply overprinted old "Colonial" banknotes. These notes were only used until 1980 when Mozambique switched from Escudos to Meticais and issued new notes. Mozambique, located on the south east coast of Africa, was first visited by the Portuguese in 1498 when Vasco de Gamma stopped by on his world changing first voyage to India. It became a colony of Portugal and stayed such until it gained independence after almost 500 years, in 1975. "Standard Catalog of World Paper Money" (Modern Issues 1961-) by Albert Pick. #116. Face: B0080987 • Old Date October 27, 1970. • Pick #111 overprinted by the new government. • Black on multicolor underprint. • Joäo de Azevedo Coutinho at left. • He was the “Governor General” of Portuguese Mozambique in 1905-1906. • New overprint: BANCO DE MOÇAMBIQUE Back: Sailing ship seal. The Note: A nice piece, it has a few light wrinkles and gentle bends but has never been folded or creased. Bright color it has no tears or holes.
