MollerThe Choir School is devoted to excellence in music, in all of theliberal arts and in the quality of living among all its members.Though the Choir School is not a music school, the performance ofthe boys is thoroughly professional in character. The aim of the choiris to maintain a standard of excellence of music in the worship of Godand to use its vast resources to be a distinguished example of the bestin church music.The Choir School is a boarding school where the boys live in anintimate, family-like setting. All of the boys in the school are admittedas choristers in grades five and six and stay in the school until theygraduate in grade eight. Many alumni earn substantial scholarships toattend leading preparatory schools such as Exeter, Andover, St. Paul's(N. H.), Loomis, Choate and Kent.The school enrolls approximately fifty students in grades five througheight. It accepts new candidates in grades five and six. The studentsare academically gifted and come from a wide diversity of cultural,geographical and sociological backgrounds.What the boys learn in their classes is enhanced and reinforced bytheir living in a great metropolitan center where much learning experi-ence is available in every field. The school is within walking distance ofCarnegie Hall, the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, the Metro-politan Opera, Broadway theaters and many museums. The boysregularly attend the theater, opera, concerts and recitals.In addition to the usual academic subjects, elective courses areoffered in Woodworking, Crystal Growing, Journalism, Technology,Art, Creative Writing, Photography, and Film Study. The Faculty isyoung and imaginative. The faculty-student ratio is five to one.The philosophy of the school stresses learning by doing and dis-covering, and subordinates teaching to learning. Self-discipline andpursuit of excellence are encouraged. The level of study is advancedand individualized. Students learn at their own rate and in small groupswhere much individual attention is possible.There is a full program of athletic activities. Every boy plays on ateam involved in interscholastic competition. Faculty members sharethe coaching duties. Sports activities take place on playing fields innear-by parks and in the Choir School's gymnasium.The Choir School is a church school. Theology is a required subject.Prayers are said in the dormitory each evening. The school chaplain,assisted by clergy from the parents group, plan agapes which stress theministry of the church to those in need. Much effort is directed atdeveloping a caring, concerned Christian community through encour-aging each of the boys to become sensitive to needs of others and tofind the ways that he can best grow to becoming a contributing andcommitted member of the school community.The Choir School is actively involved in teacher training. Workshopsare held in all subject areas for both the Choir School staff and forfaculty members from other schools. Boys attend the workshops asregular participants.Twice each year, for one week in the fall and for two weeks in thespring, the school moves to a camp on a lake in Ivoryton, Connecticut,Classes are altered to take advantage of the natural environment. Sail-ing, swimming, canoeing and fishing activities are part of the sportsprogram.The admission procedure includes an informal audition and academitesting.
