Description: For those interested in juvenile books illustrated by the noted American artist and writer Maurice Sendak (1928-2012), or books written by the American poet Randall Jarrell (1914-1965), up for auction is a paperback reprint edition of a noteworthy collaborative project of the two, The Animal Family, "A Yearling Book" published by Dell Publishing Co. of New York. The title originally appeared in 1965, and this is a stated "Second Yearling Printing," from June 1972. The book, called "A Modern Fable for All Ages" on the front cover, and its original price, 75 cents, can be seen on the top right of the front cover. The book measures 5 inches wide by 7-1/2 inches high and comprises 181 printed pages. Sendak has provided seven full-page chapter illustrations as well as smaller in-text decorative motifs throughout; all are in black and white. Here’s the description of the book printed on the book's back cover (which also includes excerpts from glowing Library Journal and New York Times reviews and a brief profile of Jarrell, "one of the most respected and admired poets of his time"): In a place where the forest ran down to the ocean, a hunter lived all alone. It was a beautiful place. The spring meadow was foam white and sea blue with flowers. The sun dipped into the sea at night, and meteors streaked across the sky. But there was no one to give the flowers to and no one to whom the hunter could say, "Look! Look! -- until he found himself a family. And a strange and wonderful family it was. First came the lovely singing Mermaid. Then, Old Eat-and-Sleep the Bear. And a Lynx with a purr like distant thunder. And finally, a baby boy. "Say what you like, but such things do happen -- not often, but they do happen." The illustrated title page reads: The Animal Familyby Randall Jarrell DECORATIONS BYMaurice Sendak A YEARLING BOOK On the next page, opposite the dedication ("To Elfi / From Mary and Randall") are these 13 lines: Published byDELL PUBLISHING CO., INC.750 Third AvenueNew York, N.Y. 10017Copyright 1965 by Random House, Inc.Illustrations Copyright 1965 by Maurice Sendak. All rights reserved under Internationaland Pan-American Copyright Conventions. For information address Pantheon Books.Reprinted by arrangement with Pantheon Books,a division of Random House, Inc., New York, N.Y.Printed in the United States of AmericaSecond Yearling printing -- June 1972 The Contents page, which has a small Sendak illustration at the top, reads (leaving out the page numbers): I The HunterII The MermaidIII The Hunter Brings Home a BabyIV The BearV The LynxVI The Lynx and the Bear Bring Home a BoyVII The Boy Here’s the brief introduction to the author’s Wikipedia entry:Randall Jarrell (May 6, 1914 – October 14, 1965) was an American poet, literary critic, children's author, essayist, and novelist. He was the 11th Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress—a position that now bears the title Poet Laureate of the United States.Among other honors, Jarrell was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship for the years 1947–48; a grant from the National Institute of Arts and Letters, in 1951; and the National Book Award for Poetry, in 1961. And here’s the start of Maurice Sendak's Wikipedia article:Maurice Bernard Sendak (June 10, 1928 – May 8, 2012) was an American author and illustrator of children's books. He became most widely known for his book Where the Wild Things Are, first published in 1963. Born to Polish-Jewish parents, his childhood was affected by the death of many of his family members during the Holocaust. Sendak also wrote works such as In the Night Kitchen, Outside Over There, and illustrated many works by other authors including the Little Bear books by Else Holmelund Minarik. The overall condition of this vintage juvenile paperback is good, considering the inferior-quality paper on which it is printed. The glossy cover has corner bends, spotting, smudging, rubbing, scratches, etc. The paper within is quite yellowed / age-toned. The first page has spotting, staining, and corner bends, as well as a red-inked stamp from a New Jersey bookseller, reading "BERGEN / PAPERBACK EXCHANGE / 8 PALISADE AVENUE / BERGENFIELD, NJ 07621 / 385-0984." There's some minor spotting, corner bends, spotting, tears (see 10th photo uploaded, with tear on side of page 5), etc., on the yellowed text pages within, but there appear to be no annotations, marginalia, underlining, scribbles, etc., nor any major damage or flaws in the way of clipped or missing pages, tape repairs, water or other liquid stains, large tears, etc. The book has neither a musty nor smoky odor. This 52-year-old paperback copy of The Animal Family, written by Randall Jarrell and illustrated by Maurice Sendak, is being sold AS IS, AS DESCRIBED ABOVE AND PICTURED WITHIN. I am setting what I feel is a very reasonable starting price for the auction, and there is NO RESERVE. I am also including a Buy It Now price. Shipping and handling for the juvenile title: $5 to U.S. addresses (via Media Mail). Note that eBay has now instituted a shipping program whereby bidders from outside the U.S. can bid on or buy all sellers' items, and the seller sends everything to an eBay facility in the U.S. for shipping. So far, this seems to be working out well (though one item bought by someone in China never made it to its destination, though eBay very quickly refunded the buyer). If you want this children's book sent more quickly to you (e.g., via Priority Mail in the U.S.), you must request this asap after winning or purchasing it (or beforehand, if possible), and I will adjust the amount accordingly. I will do my best to send the book out to you no more than 2-3 business days following receipt of payment (that is, when eBay informs me that your payment has been posted to or otherwise cleared in my account). If you are the winner or buyer of this vintage children's book, PAYMENT IS EXPECTED WITHIN ONE WEEK (7 DAYS) FROM THE PURCHASE DATE. If you cannot pay within this time frame, PLEASE contact me asap so we can work something out. I'm very flexible and understanding, but I would appreciate communication from you one way or another. PLEASE NOTE THAT RETURNS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED NOR REFUNDS MADE FOR THIS BOOK, SO PLEASE READ MY DESCRIPTION CAREFULLY, LOOK CLOSELY AT THE PHOTOGRAPHS I’VE UPLOADED, AND ASK ME ANY QUESTIONS YOU MAY HAVE ABOUT THE CONTENTS OR CONDITION OF THE ITEM. THANKS FOR YOUR UNDERSTANDING! Thanks for looking, and please don't hesitate to email me if you have any questions about The Animal Family. PLEASE NOTE THAT, IF POSSIBLE, I WILL HAPPILY ADJUST SHIPPING CHARGES FOR MULTIPLE PURCHASES!!! UNFORTUNATELY, THIS APPLIES ONLY TO DOMESTIC, NOT FOREIGN, BUYERS. ALSO, NOTE THAT, IF APPLICABLE, eBAY WILL ADD ANY APPROPRIATE STATE SALES TAX TO THE INVOICE.
