Issued and dated November 24, 1972, it pictures General Carmona, a former President of Portugal. Portuguese Angola initially used the Real denomination until it was replaced by the Escudo in 1914. The Escudo was circulated until 1928 when the Angolar was introduced. The Angolares notes were again replaced by the Escudo in 1958. After independence, in 1977 the Kwanza replaced the Escudo. Angola is the seventh largest country in Africa but has been plagued by civil war since gaining independence from Portugal in 1975.
