Dame Ivy Compton-Burnett (1884-1969) was an English novelist, published in the original editions as I. Compton-Burnett. She was awarded the 1955 James Tait Black Memorial Prize for her novel Mother and Son. Her works consist mainly of dialogue and focus on family life among the late Victorian and Edwardian upper middle class. Compton-Burnett was appointed a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1967. She was educated with her siblings out in the country as a child, and later went to Holloway College, and received a degree in Classics. Compton-Burnett spent most of her adult life as a companion to Margaret Jourdain (1876-1951), and shared her Kensington flat. Jourdain was a leading authority and writer on the decorative arts and the history of furniture. After Jourdain’s death in 1951 Compton-Burnett was likely in a relationship with Madge Garland (1898-1990) an influential figure in the British fashion scene. Garland worked as a fashion journalist and editor for British Vogue and Women’s Wear Daily. They stayed together, taking trips together until Compton-Burnett's death in 1969.
