Knievel is a tough guy toimitate. By leaping his bike overparked cars like a human cannonball,he has become rich. By crowing thathe will jump the Grand Canyon (re-cently changed to Idaho’s SnakeRiver) he has earned publicity im-possible to buy, even if he never goesthrough with it. And by ruining hisbody, by splintering more bones thanit is possible to count, Knievel has wonfavor with masochists everywhere.Almost singlehandedly he dominatesthe breakneck world of motorcyclestunt riding.Pity the other bike stunters who aretrying to get out from under Knievel’sshadow and make their own reputa-tions.Like the Sergeant Major in theBritish Royal Artillery who recentlybolted a motorcycle over the pronebodies of 41 men, claiming a worldrecord. Afterwards he reaped notpraise, only scorn. The praise went tothe poor enlisted stiffs who allowedthe Sergeant Major to jump over them. One bike stunter who has made thebig time is an Italian teenager namedAntonio Mellini. Last summer indowntown Naples, Mellini whizzed his125cc Ducati onto sidewalks, knockeddown chairs in the sidewalk cafes andcreated such havoc he was the subjectof a police manhunt for weeks. Today, regarded as some sort of folk hero, hehas lucrative offers pouring in fromtelevision and the movies. But Antoniomade his reputation because he raisedhell and defied authority, not forskilled riding. Here are three young stunters whoseem to have the best chances oftoppling Evel Knievel from his pre-carious throne. Whether they make itor not depends upon what new break-neck stunts they can dream up, howmuch publicity they generate, and to alarge degree how sturdy their bonesare.GARY WELLS is 14 years old. Heis the youngest bike stunter and easilythe most astonishing. The first time hewent before a live audience he hurtleda dozen cars. To convince the crowdthat this was no fluke he repeated thejump — and boomed through the airfor 102 feet. The boy said, “That does it. I’vebroken Evel Knisvel’s distance record.I know I’ve broken it because myfather and I measured the distance ofhis jumps. I use wider cars thanKnievel does anyway. I’ve jumped thefurthest.”Phoenix’s Beeline drag strip paidhim a reported S5,000 to come backand jump again two weeks later. Thistime Gary rode his Montesa over 15cars. He had his screaming bike nearly20 feet in the air when the last car wascleared, and consequently, overshotthe landing ramp completely.A front wheel broke when the bikehit the ground, and at the same timethe throttle stuck. Gary was pitchedover the handlebars onto the track. The crowd gasped and waited to see ifhe would get up. He didn’t.When Gary regained consciousnessin the hospital he was told thatmeasurements had been taken, andthat he and the bike had traveledthrough the air an incredible 155 feet,10 inches — more than half the lengthof a football field.“I’d like to have a car-jumpingshowdown with Knievel,” Gary says.“Anytime he wants.”His father, who is also his manager, says that Gary will soon be jumpingalmost every week because requestshave come in from Mexico, Englandand Germany. A public relationsagency has been impowered to handlehim and has arranged for bookingsthroughout the world, starting im-mediately. This means Gary will missschool, but a special tutor will ac-company him on his travels.“This is going to be big,” his fathersays. “He’s the greatest stuntmangoing, he makes all these other guyslook like nothing. He’s going to makea lot of money before he’s through.”At age 14 Gary is becoming acelebrity before he can become aperson. He answers questionsflippantly, indifferently, but he’s stillonly a boy. Apparently he has alwaysbeen precocious. He started racinggo-karts at nine in Phoenix and at tenrode small bikes in steeple chases.“I won everything there was to winin go-karts and got tired of them,” heshrugs. “Then I started racing bikes...
