A new fire-fighting system was tested in an airplane hangar at Palmdale, California, recently and in three minutes a blanket of bubbles 20 feet high covered 1-1/2 acres. Creating what may well have been the world's biggest bubble bath, 11 foam generators in the hangar ceiling sent six-foot columns of detergent cascading to the floor 70 feet below. Simultaneously, firemen opened the valves of an overhead water system and loosed a 10,000 gallon-per-minute monsoon onto the foam. The foam and water system is a key element in the fire protection system designed for Lockheed's new $30 million commercial aircraft facility, where $15 million L-1011 TriStar jetliners will be assembled and flight tested.Photo measures 10 x 8.25inches.
