In my opinion, this remains the best work of its famous authors. Once banned as sacrilegious by the BBC (according to Ted Neely, the film Judas), in the U.S. JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR reached #1 on Billboard's 200. It represents a unique example of theater imitating vinyl. After selling millions of copies worldwide, what had only been a studio recording was expanded by lyricist Tim Rice and composer AL Webber into a stage show. After playing to sellout crowds again in many countries, "Superstar" was adapted to film in 1973. Barry Dennen (Pilate) and Yvonne Elliman (Mary Magdalene) are the only original studio cast members to appear in Norman Jewison's picture.
