Description: "Room with Three Lamps, 1898" Source: Vuillard, published in 1968 Description Title: "This interior, of subdued splendor, represents the salon of Misia Natanson. in the Rue St. Florentin. It is a room of charming proportions where the lamps, shedding a dim but genial light, play on the vaguely established figures, the bursts of greenery, the rectangles of soft color, and the rich tapestry. The whole scene is gentle, melancholy, and sweet, full of revelations and of dignified intervals. In a marked way the picture is suffused with the esoteric work of the writer Mallarmé, spirit of Symbolic poetry and friend. of both Misia and Vuillard. 'To suggest,' Mallarmé wrote, "'here is the dream. It is the perfect use of this mystery which constitutes the symbol; to evoke an image little by little in order to show a state of soul.' How responsive to his almost mystical teaching Vuillard is here. The deliberate lack of precision in this picture constitutes its principal charm. What the artist sees is filtered through thought and emotion, not to speak of his romantic attachment to Misia. The three figures can be identified. At the left, Misia, head bowed, appears to be bending over a piece of embroidery; in the center the playwright Romain Coolus extends himself sleepily in a Thonet chair, while, at the right, Thadée Natanson seems to doze over his reading, perhaps page proofs of the Revue Blanche. This magical scene sums up a whole chapter, both aesthetic and personal, in Vuillard's ardent youth." Unique and distinctive.
